Last month, BHS Wrestling team saw an entire season of hard work pay off.
At regionals, held at Fruita Monument High School February 15-16, freshman Joey Airola (106) and sophomore Theron Sovndal (170) both qualified for the 2019 CHSAA State Wrestling Championships. Joey dominated his bracket, taking a bye into the quarterfinals, where he pinned his opponent in two periods, then won semis by decision 5-1, and finally clinched first place in an exciting 9-1 major decision. After a tough first match, Theron fought his way back through the consolation bracket with straight pins before his third place victory by decision 2-1. Sophomore Kaleb Oliver (113), junior Marcus Borden (120), and freshman Joseph Johnson (195) all took fifth place as well, securing the title of alternate for their brackets. The State Championship the following week proved just as momentous, with Joey ultimately taking second place in the 106 bracket and Theron wrestling a hard-fought and exciting two matches.
Congrats to Joey, Theron, and the entire team for an incredible season!
Please help continue the Boulder High success by helping reach our fundraising goal of $5,000 this off season so that we can purchase the team new uniforms for next year.

Boulder High Wrestling
The 2018-2019 season marked an exciting turnaround for the Panthers’ wrestling program. Under new coaching by Will LeBoeuf and Liam Henderson, the wrestling team has taken a new direction by embracing an offensive and aggressive wrestling style that is all about scoring points and getting pins. All the members of the team rose to their coaches’ challenge week after week and ultimately came away with a stunning record to show for all their hard work: the Panthers went 7-1 in duals (a massive improvement over the 0-8 record of the previous season) and qualified 2 wrestlers and 3 alternates for the 2019 state tournament. This represented a new record in the number of Panthers on the Regionals’ podium, and we are immensely proud of everyone for the progress they made this season.
Coach Will and Coach Liam attribute the program’s success this season to getting the work in early, and next season will be no different! Wrestlers will have a chance to start their training for the winter season in the summertime, giving them months in the off-season to build strength and endurance, keep their skills sharp, and grow together as a team.
